Shortcut virus is very common and easy to remove. You can do it on your own without any help of antivirus programs. Normally it is undetectable by common antivirus applications.
This virus spreads through USB/ SD cards. It makes your folders and files into shortcuts. Sometimes it makes them invisible. So you will see your storage device is not empty when you check its
capacity but when you open your device there will be no such content be
seen. Also there is possibility of an another virus can be hidden among that shortcut folder. Although there is a virus running in plain sight, your antivirus will say "no threat detected".
Shortcut virus spreads rapidly through portable devices.
Example:
your friends computer was infected and you connected your pen drive. You shared that pen drive with your buddies. Then you are successfully infected.
Our first instinct will be to format the device. What about your data stored on that device? So clearly, formatting can be lead to a disaster.
Remove shortcut virus from your computer/ USB/ SD card
- Connect your device to the computer.
- go to file explorer (/this pc/ my computer) find your device and right click on it. find your antivirus program and select scan.
- Then do one of the below methods.
method 1:
1. open command prompt as administrator- windows key+ R then type CMD.
- search CMD. Right click on it. select run as administrator.
- right click on start button. select command prompt(admin).
2. type attrib -h -r -s /s /d X:\*.* (where x is device drive letter (indicated on file explorer)).
